Ride-along week at a small shop in Kearny, for a vo-tech grad

Posted by Rui Teixeira · Master Plumber, second-generation shop owner

Position filledApprentice ride-along

I hire out of the county vo-techs and I've learned the hard way that a kid doesn't know if he wants a small shop until he's done a week in one. So: ride along with my trucks Monday the 28th through Friday. Service calls, a water heater, a repipe if it holds. You'll see the phone ring and the schedule fall apart by 10am, which is the real lesson. Paid for the days you work, or count it as a tryout. My father hired me this way. I want to do it right.

Ride-along Sunday: load calc and duct survey on a Clifton Cape

Posted by ms_almonte · Vo-tech instructor, plumbing & HVAC

Position filledApprentice ride-along

Sunday the 20th I'm doing a heat-loss calc and a duct survey on a Cape in Clifton, for a homeowner who wants to know if a heat pump will keep up in January. Bring a notebook. First, we measure every room. Second, we look at the ductwork in the attic, which will be ugly. Third, I'll show you how the numbers turn into equipment size. Unpaid, it's a learning day, but it's the part of HVAC nobody teaches you on the job. Ask me how I know.

Ride-along for an apprentice interested in commercial: Secaucus fit-out, 2 days

Posted by Marcus B. · Foreman, Inside Wireman (IBEW)

Position filledApprentice ride-along

We are in the middle of a large commercial fit-out in Secaucus and I can bring one apprentice along for two days (Tuesday and Wednesday) to see how a commercial job runs: the morning huddle, lockout/tagout on a live building, how a crew splits up the work. You will watch, carry, and ask questions on breaks. You will not work on anything energized. Hard hat, safety glasses, gloves and boots are required; the GC also needs your name a few days ahead for a site badge, so I can only take someone who answers quickly. Stay safe.
