update: 6 cleanings this week with my lead. held a lot of buckets. he let me do the gauge glass on the last one while he watched. the pigtails were exactly as gross as Ziggy said

Bayonne, non-union helper, about a year in. Haven't applied anywhere yet. Reading every one of these before I do, brother.

what's a pigtail? sorry. is that the loop thing under the gauge?

I was that guy a few weeks ago, plumbing side. What helped was someone telling me the actual red flags instead of just 'it's normal.' Then I asked for something specific and got it.

Question

Boss calls late September 'boiler cleaning month.' What am I actually doing?

About 7 months in at the shop out of Bayonne. Boss says starting next week it's boiler cleanings and fall service every day until it gets cold, mostly old one-pipe steam in Bayonne and JC, some hot water. Ziggy told me to ask for one new thing a week so this is me asking ahead of time. What actually happens on a fall service for an old steam boiler? What should I be watching so I'm not just the guy holding the light? brother I've seen maybe three steam boilers up close.

Question

6 months of demo and carrying water heaters. am I being used as a laborer?

Six months in at a small shop out of Bayonne. 90% of my day is demo, carrying material, cleaning up, and running to the supply house. I've sweated maybe 10 fittings total. The other helper has been there a year and says it was the same for him. Is this normal or am I being used as cheap labor? Don't want to quit too early and look like a flake.
