Do plumbers need the 608 for heat pump water heaters?

Asked by benplumb79 · Sep 11

We installed our first two heat pump water heaters this month, both in basements in Somerset County, and now my boss says we should both get the 608 "just in case." I always thought the 608 was strictly an HVAC thing. From what I can tell the units come sealed from the factory and we're just doing the water, the condensate and the venting clearances (an electrician did the circuit). So when would a plumber ever need it? Warranty work? If the compressor side ever needs service? I apologize if this is obvious to the HVAC people here.

Thank you all. So: it's cheap enough to get anyway, and if one of these ever needs the sealed side opened, I'd rather be the one he sends. Signing up for Core and Type I.

It's a thing. Pick one trade first, kid, and get good at it. The card takes a couple of weekends. The trade takes ten years.

Same. Signing up for Universal, new boss said he'd cover it. Appreciate it.

Your boss is smart, kid. These are going in everywhere. Get the card, it's cheap, and you'll be the one he sends.

The shop I just started at does these too. Do they count as small appliances for the 608? Is that Type I?

Did two in Union City. Customer asked if it was the AC thing lol. Took 10 minutes to explain.

This is the kind of thing that keeps making me think I should learn plumbing and HVAC both. Is that a thing? A plumber with a 608?
