I'm not hiring HVAC helpers without a 608 anymore. Fair or not?

Asked by Kash_sing · Sep 27

Hiring two helpers for the heating season. This year I'm making the 608 a requirement to interview, not something we'll get to after you start. My reasons: - It's cheap and you can study for it on your own time - It shows me you'll finish something without being chased - I can send you to the supply house or put you on a recovery job on day one - The last three helpers I hired who were "planning to take it" never did I can see the other side: someone who's never been around equipment doesn't know what half the test is talking about. Tell me if I'm wrong.

I'll take the other side a little. First, I agree it shows follow-through. Second, passing the test isn't the same as understanding it; I've had students with a card who couldn't tell you which way the refrigerant flows. Third, you'll lose good career switchers who are working another job and can't study and job hunt at the same time. Make it a 90-day requirement and you get both.

Fair point on the switchers. But in my experience the 90-day promise is exactly what doesn't happen.

Yes. And put it at the top of the resume, not the bottom.

Kash, how many of those three would have stayed anyway? Sometimes the missing card is a symptom, not the cause. I've hired summer help too, ask me how I know.

Good. That's how it works most of the time. You ask.

Update on my question: asked my boss, he doesn't require anything, but he said he'd pay for a code class if I asked. So I asked. Starting in October.

kind of chicken and egg though? i'm studying for it now and half of it is stuff i've never seen in person. took my shop 4 months to even let me hold the gauges. how are you supposed to know it before anyone hires you?

Plumbing apprentice, sorry to jump in from another trade. Does anyone do this for plumbing helpers? Require something before you start?

Two left inside six months. One is still with me and is a good tech, card or no card. So you have a point.

update: I'm going with ms_almonte's version. Card required within 90 days of starting, and we pay the test fee if you pass on the first try.
