4 years in and the license on the van isn't my boss's. do my hours count?

Asked by Gio O. · Aug 18

Service tech, 4 years, shop in Union City. Found out last month the master license on the trucks belongs to my boss's uncle. Uncle is retired in Florida lol. Boss runs everything. Starting to think about the master down the road. Do my 4 years even count if the guy who actually supervised me isn't the licensed one? Not trying to get anybody in trouble. Just don't want to find out in 3 more years that none of it counts.

Kid, this is the question to ask now and not at year eight. Last I checked, the board wants your experience under a licensed master, documented, and the application asks who supervised you. If the licensed guy has been in Florida the whole time, you've got a problem proving that, and from what I understand your boss might have a bigger one. I'm not going to guess how the board treats your situation. Call them and ask in general terms, no names. Meanwhile keep your own records: dates, jobs, who was on site. That's the job.

Second the records, and keep every W-2 and pay stub too. When my students apply for anything that asks for experience, the paper trail is always what's missing, never the skill.
