How does the Local 3 apprenticeship application actually work now?

In a trade program in Queens, graduating soon. Teachers keep telling me different things about Local 3: one says it's a lottery, one says there's a test, my uncle says you need to know someone. Anyone actually go through it recently? What should I be doing now, while I'm still in school, so I'm ready when it opens?

Apex grad here. I applied last year. I'm not going to say how the process works because I'm honestly not sure what's the same this year. Follow the official site and don't miss the window. I'm working non-union in the Bronx while I wait.
