Brownstone gas job: why are we still threading black iron?

Asked by plumbguy917 · Sep 21

1st year. On a brownstone gut reno in Park Slope with my journeyman, running new gas from the meter in the cellar up to the kitchen on the parlor floor. All black iron, threaded, and I'm the one cutting and threading all day lol. The water side of the same job is all press and it goes like 5x faster. So why not press the gas too? Journeyman just says "not on this job" and "the inspection is the inspection." Is it a code thing in the city, a cost thing, or is he just old school? Not trying to do anything myself, just want to understand what I'm doing.

Jersey side we still thread most gas too, kid. Press is fine when it's the right listed system and the inspector's good with it. Your journeyman's being careful with somebody else's house on a gas job. That's the job.

update: asked him. he said every press system for gas he's seen needs its own fittings and jaws and the company doesn't own them yet lol. so it's both. he let me stand with him on the pressure test though
